Gabions are baskets manufactured to EN 10233-3 and SANS 1580 with hexagonal wire mesh Type 80, commonly referred to as double twist wire mesh. The steel wire used in manufacturing Gabions are either 2.7mm or 3mm in diameter and is protected by Class A – Zinc or a Zinc Alloy (Galfan) coating, for dry areas and low aggressive environments.
In hydraulic and highly aggressive environments, the Polimac® coated gabions are recommended. Gabions are modular units – 0.5 and 1m high, with diaphragms spaced at 1m centres. This ensures higher stiffness of the structure.
Gabions are environmentally friendly, able to withstand water velocity up to 8 m/s and used as mass gravity structures and erosion control protection in hydraulic applications.
